The Deconstruction is a classic form of Improvisation developed by Del Close and the Family.
Along with The Harold and the Improvised Movie it makes up one-third of Close's 3 Mad Rituals.
In this class, it is taught as a 30-minute improv format for a team of approximately eight improvisers.
Two improvisers perform a 10-15 minute dramatic master scene. At key moments, the rest of the improvisers (the support team) will pause the master scene to present comedic scenes that "deconstruct" the master scene's characters, their egos, and their relationship. Whenever the master scene resumes, we add a bit more dramatic flair.
The juxtaposition between the slow/grounded master scene and the fast/silly support scenes make for a unique, theatrical experience.
The "Decon" routinely makes audience members cry, gasp, and make noises other than laughter... but don't worry, there's plenty of that too!
