Sips and Scenes – 1 May

Our popular Friday evening blend of after-work drinks and improv training. 2-hour drop-in sessions that are open to all community members from the first week of Starter 1 onward

March 2026 Update: Sips moves to Theory Bar 🍺🍷🍸 Sips & Scenes is now takes place at Theory Bar by default! It will move to the Swanston Street annex when Theory is unavailable due to a special event or function. BYO drinks are not allowed at Theory Bar, but are very much permitted when class is at the Annex

Come let your hair down after a long week of work, enjoy some beverages (alcoholic or otherwise) and get some scenework reps with one of our most exciting senior instructors:

  • Josh Chodziesner
  • Laura Josephine
  • Adam Kangas
  • Barney Pollock
  • Hayley Tantau
  • Matt Young

Anyone with Improv Conspiracy experience is welcome – whether you're two weeks into Starter 1 or you're a Harold Night all-star. We'll work on scenework fundamentals from a variety of exciting and accessible angles.

___

When you're doing, coaching or watching improv, what do you value most in a scene?

Josh Chodziesner: Getting out of your head and finding ways to stay consistently excited by the opportunity to build something that you, your scene partner and the audience can all get on board with

Laura Josephine: Confidence and trust are the secret ingredients to great improv. Scenes are easier when we're working less and playing with more

Adam Kangas: Having as much fun as possible while keeping the audience on-side – by all means, be a freak, but be an empathetic one

Barney Pollock: Playing to lose and loving every loss, emotion based pattern play, driving a petrol tanker into a burning building

Hayley Tantau: The best kind of improv is born from feeling safe, silly, and playful. It’s when following the fun and asking β€œif this is true, what else is true?” becomes second-nature

Matt Young: Improv can be easy - be generous, trust your intuition, use your body, aim for clarity, and have a few key moves in your back pocket

Matt Young

Matt has worked as an independent improv coach since early 2019 and is thrilled to be teaching with TIC. He firmly believes that improv rules are often life rules, and that excellent work is born of love, curiousity, attentiveness, and fun. Find some examples of his improv philosophy here and here.

When he is off-stage, Matt enjoys reading fantasy novels, listening to self-help audiobooks, and playing Mario Party.
